When I first started offering Educational activities (Pre-Pinterest) , I relied on several Resource Books to get my feet wet. These Resources gave me the wings to eventually create and gather ideas for
my own curriculum.
You may be tossing around the Idea of adding some educational elements in your Home Daycare, you might be tired of the "Same Old" projects, or you might just want to recharge your curriculum.
If you: are just getting your feet wet, find planning Curriculum overwhelming, or just don't have the time to hunt for ideas, I wanted to recommend a few resources that might work for you.
Please keep in mind this post contains my opinions and products I have used, but I have also included affiliate links to make it easier for you to find these products. Now on to the fun stuff!
The Weekly Curriculum is one of my Favorite go to resources. The book provides you with 52 Thematic Units and everything is laid out for you. I like that this program focuses on Learning Through Play. You will find several suggested weekly activities to incorporate into your program focusing on the areas of: math, music, movement, language, science, and art. In addition to being affordable, the program is flexible (you can choose to do 1 or all activities), and it also gives you a great feel for how to create your own Preschool Curriculum.
Infants and Toddlers
Do you care for Younger Children? One of my Favorites for the "Littles" is The Complete Resource Book for Toddlers and Two's. This book written by Pam Schiller suggests a variety of Educational Activities for Toddlers and Two's. She also has another book specifically for Infants: The Complete Resource Book for Infants. In addition to Activities she also recommends, Songs, Books, and Toys to add to your program.
Do you have trouble finding Art Projects for your little ones? This First Art book is a FABULOUS resource! I really like how MaryAnn provides plenty of examples of "Process Art" you can do with the little ones in your care. In addition to all kinds of activities, she also includes recipes for all kinds of Paint, Dough and More.
Math Play! is a great book to add to your resource shelf. This book offers so many different activities for you to incorporate into your day. I really like how the books offers activities for Children ages 2-6 which cover the large range of ages typically found in a childcare home.
If you haven't read a book (or been to a Workshop, or Training Class) by the Lisa Murphy (or the Ooey Gooey Lady as she is often referred to) you are in for a treat. I can say, without a doubt,Play: The Foundation that Supports the House of Higher Learning Single-handedly changed my childcare philosophy and encouraged me to develop a play based program in my Daycare. This book, a long with many of her others such as Ooey Gooey, and Even More Fizzle, Bubble, Pop, Wow! are all great additions to your resource shelf.
