Are you searching for an inspirational activity for your mixed-age group? One that could easily be a craft or an educational classroom activity? If you sometimes find your treasures on the craft stores' clearance shelves, like me, you'll likely have most materials on hand.
Here is a simple and oh, so easily adaptable winter activity, inspired by the "Deck the Halls" Theme!
Various size and shape buttons
Small wood slices or wooden buttons
Wool needles, Thread
Optional small wood log block
Print a simple Christmas tree pattern -I used pg. 40 from the Deck the Halls printable pack. Trace it onto the craft burlap and cut out the outline. Repeat onto cardboard and glue it down. The cardboard keeps it nice and firm while in use by the children.
Paint the small wood slices in various colors with acrylic paint, let them dry and glue them onto the clothespins.
Have the children strengthen their hand muscles, while decorating the Christmas tree. Encourage them to say the colors out loud!
You can use any colorful craft material to glue onto the clothespins, also different clothespins sizes for more difficulty and ones found in stores, such as the Dollar Tree.
Finish decorating the tree with the small log block piece.
If you have older children who love sewing, you can set it up as an activity for life practical skills. Use buttons with larger holes, thread and a wool needle and sew various buttons onto the burlap.
You could also use this activity as a craft, glue various colors and size buttons onto the burlap, and turn it into a simple craft or a Christmas ornament.
Children of all ages will enjoy this fun activity!
